Newly-promoted Luton Town nearly caused one of the biggest upsets of the 2023/2024 Premier League campaign, as they earned a credible 1-1 draw with Merseyside outfit Liverpool at Kenilworth Road stadium on Sunday.

The Reds had a barrage of chances in the first half, with Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez having four shots in the opening fifteen minutes with two of them on target.

Luton Town goalkeeper Kaminsky was instrumental in keeping the scores level at the interval, as he kept out efforts from Nunez and Ryan Gravenberch.

The second period saw Liverpool create opportunities to get the opener, with Darwin Nunez guilty of missing a glorious chance when he blazed the ball over the goalpost when he had just the goalkeeper to beat.

Despite Liverpool’s best efforts, it was Luton Town who found the breakthrough in the most bizarre manner.

A corner kick from Liverpool quickly turned into a counter attack from the home side, with former Man Utd player Tahith Chong slotting past Alisson Becker in the 80th minute. The Reds protested for a penalty, claiming that Virgil van Dijk’s headed ball had struck Ross Barkley in the arm in the box but the claims amounted to nothing.

The Reds were not to be denied however, as substitute Luis Diaz headed home deep in injury time to salvage a point for Jurgen Klopp’s men and moved them to third on the standings (three points behind Manchester City), while Luton Town are still hovering above the relegation zone but the famous result will boost their confidence levels.

The Reds are looking to continue their great start to the 2023/2024 season, in which they have only lost one game across all competitions. A win over the hosts will push them even closer towards the summit of the PL table.

Luton Town on the other hand, have not had it easy since their return to the top-flight and face a daunting task in the form of Liverpool. They have battled to some decent results of late but might fall short of the quality needed to get a positive outcome against Jurgen Klopp’s men
